Photoshop Tutorial: Blazing Man

I want to show how to create a man wich is on fire. I search to make flames without using brush finding on the web.

step 1

Open the photo you choose to work on it. In my example, i use a photo find on www.sxc.hu . It’s called ” La Haine”, in reference of the film. I expand the canvas size to have more place for the flames.

step 2

You have to create a new layer and use Brush tool to make a gray line around the character…simply easy.

step 3

I make the same thing with white color. This color will be the base of flames. You have to draw the white line where flames will grow up.

step 4

The most important step of this tutorial. You have to draw flames with the Smudge tool. I really like this tool, that’s very easy to make something which looks real. Take time to make this part of the tutorial.

step 5

This step is usefull to put the finishing touches on flames. You have to make a zoom on the character to finish completely flams. It’s important to work details for a better realism …

step 6

Firstly, you have to change the blending mode of the layer on “Linear dodge”. After that, you have to set up the Levels…”Image/adjustments/Levels”. In this exemple, i use “38 ; 0.82 ; 255″

step 7

Flames is coming into sight…You have to set up “Color Balance” to see flames. Image/Adjustments/Color Balance. In this example, i add red & yellow color in shadows, midtones & highlights. Make your own adjustments to have your desired flames

step 8

You have to use a layer mask to keep only flames you want. In this example, i use “Diamond Gradient” in “Gradient tool” option to keep what i want. With this tool, you can create the atmosphere you’re are searching.

step 9

In this step, you have to work directly on the character. It’s important to have an harmony on the photo. “Layer/Adjustments/Color Balance” with the character’s layer selected. In this example, i add some red & yellow color in “shadows ; midtones ; highlights”…It’s pretty much the same flames’ set up.

step 10

This step is just a detail. You can change the exposur to obtain exactly the atmosphere you want. Image/Adjustments/Exposur.

step 11

You have to duplicate the main layer with the character. On this new layer, you have to aplly a blur filter. “Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur”. In this example, 3 for the radius.

step 12

In this finnally step, it’s the same work than the 8th step. IYou have to use the “Gradient tool”, with “Diamond Gradient “in option to keep only the blur effect you need. This effect is important only for the top of the head and you can clear it for the face.

step 13

Final Result…. with a simple stroke to demarcate the photo.
