Photoshop Tutorial: Aquatic Spheres

Learn how to make a cool blue aquatic sphere. Photoshop CS 2 or higher is recommended for this.

step 1

Form a sample image to apply these steps, make the resolution u want, it doesn’t matter….just make a circle with eclipse tool and fill with the applied color shown in the pic.” Note that you must apply a dark level of your desired color, this will be explained later..”

step 2

By the eclipse selection at the top of the eclipse use the gradient tool as shown in the pic. to make the light reflection…” to make a gradient go to the gradient tool, make the first colors white while the other transparent”

step 3

RC on the selection of the light effect we made and use layer via copy “it is better than duplicate layer” then move the layer downward as shown and flip it vertically..

step 4

Free Transform the new layer “i.e. layer 1″ and size it as follows “see free transform bar above”: W: 120% & H: 120%_since it is supposed to be a glass sphere and glass deflect the light_ then press the right mark to apply the transformation and move the layer 1 to the appropriate position for the light refraction as shown below…

step 5

Use the Gaussian blur on Layer 1 as shown below with radius:4.1 pxs or as whatever appropriatable for ur image “It depends on ur image size, it may be larger than mine so u’ll have to apply more blur..”

step 6

Head to layer->Layer styles->outer glow-> and change the color of glow to blue and apply these settings: Spread:2% & Size:59 px, keep other settings as shown. Don’t click ‘ok’ now…

step 7

Head then to the inner glow section, change the glow color as before; blue, make the Opacity 100% “IMPORTANT”, make the size: 76 px as shown below, now click ‘ok’..

step 8

ok, this is the hardest part, head to Layer->Flatten image, select the ball with eclipse selection by holding down shift for more accuracy, u’ll better use transform selection from RC on the selected area, RC-> Layer via copy, head to layer->arrange->bring to front or u can press ctrl+shift+], choose the background layer from the layer bar or by holding ctrl+RC-> Background at any empty area, make an eclipse selection as shown below, make a new layer from the layer tool bar or Layer->New layer, fill the selection with the color shown at the image_The filled color was picked from the upper boundary over the light reflection spot..

step 9

Blur the shadow layer as shown below with radius: 7.5 pxs “using Gaussian blur from filter->blur” and I repeat: it depends on ur image size as described before but keep the value of radius in pxs u used in ur mind for now…

step 10

Make another eclipse selection inside the shadow and place it in the place u want, then click on create new layer as described before…

step 11

Deselect and fill with light blue color as u wish and blur the layer with radius: 3.8 pxs or 1/2 the value u used before i.e. if 7.6 pxs ->3.8 pxs
if 8 pxs.->4 pxs. and so on….

step 12

That’s it, the ball is light blue although that we choused at the beginning a dark color but later we deflected the light and spread it and the result is shiny aquatic blue sphere, so if we choused a lighter color it would be difficult- but possible-if we spread the light. users may face problems with lighter colors like yellow and pale green, good luck…
