In this tutorial, how to create your very own Vortex like one of the Default wallpapers with Windows XP.
We will start with a blank canvas of 400×300 pixels. Press D to make sure we have the Default colors - black and white, then goto Filter > Render > Fibers. Play with the settings until you get a look you prefer, and then click Ok:

Next, choose Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates, and choose Rectnagular to Polar:

I just signed up at Server Intellect and couldn’t be more pleased with my Windows Server! Check it out and see for yourself.

Now we will use the Filter > Blur > Radial Blur, choosing Zoom and Best. We will also slide the Amount up to maximum:

You may want to repeat this filter once or twice - to do so, press Ctrl+F:

Once we have a Vortex we like the look of, we can add some color by going to Edit > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. Making sure that the Colorize option is checked, use the sliders to choose a color you want your Vortex to be:

Server Intellect offers Windows Hosting Dedicated Servers at affordable prices. I’m very pleased!

As an added effect, right-click the layer we’ve been working on and choose Blending Options (if the current Layer is locked, double-click it first to make it a proper layer).
Add a Gradient Overlay to the layer, set the Blend Mode to Overlay and the Style to Radial. We can choose a regular Black/White gradient like this:

Or go for a more colorful approach, like this:

This Mini Cooper S looks pretty nice on the standard rims anyway, but lets make it slightly better!

Try and find a donor vehicle at the same angle as the car! Otherwise it will not look right..

I’ve found some wheels off a Saab Concept car.

Grab the Eclipse lasso tool and draw loosely around the wheel and tyre.

Then go to Select>Modify>Transform and adjust it using the grab handles (Shift to skew it).

Copy (ctrl+c) and then paste (Ctrl+V) it onto the image you are adding it to.

Hit Ctrl+T and then transform the wheel so it is at the same angle and is the same size as the original. If need be use the Eraser tool (E) to blend it nicely into the rest of the tyre.

You should then repeat it for the front wheel.

If the front overlaps like so…

Use the line tool and delete the overlap (as shown on the diagram).

If the front overlaps like so…

Use the lasso tool and delete the overlap (as shown on the diagram).

In this tutorial I think we’ll add a side skirt to the side of this Mazda 6 Estate.

I have managed to find a nice angle donor car from seriouswheels.com. The donor car is a Buick Lucerne.

Grab the Polygon Lasso tool (L) and draw closely around the edges of it. Once you have gone around the skirt in a full loop, the selection will be complete (hashed line like left). Then copy it, using the CTRL+C command.

Paste it (CTRL+V Command) onto the car you are modifying and then press CTRL+T to begin skewing it and altering it until it fits the car perfectly…

… kinda like this! However, as you can see, this is a rather bad colour match.

If you are in the same situation, then now is the time to adjust the hue/saturation of the skirt.

Go to Image>Adjust>Hue/Saturation. Adjusting the Hue “slider” will change the colour of the skirt. Adjusting the Saturation “slider” will change the intensity of the colour of the skirt.

There is also a brightness adjustment on there, should you need to make the skirt lighter or darker.

There we go! All it needs now is lowering slightly and a set of wheels!

This is a rather nice Honda S2000, ready for some body kit treatment.

Now, find yourself a donor image.. Hunt around on the internet (but don’t steal from Digimods!) and find a picture of a car, at the same angle! Then use the Polygon lasso tool,

and go around the edges of the bodykit as shown. Then Copy (Ctrl+C) and then Paste (Ctrl+V) the new bodykit onto the car.

Hit Ctrl+T and use the grab handles to flip it, and then skew and change the shape of it to fit in with the car

It should look something like this!

Hit enter once you are happy with the transformation.

NOW, click on the Eraser tool, and begin to rub out the tops of the bumper, so that it blends in nicely with the old one.

Now, begin to select the vents in the bumper with the lasso tool. Once you have slected the first one, hold the Shift key, and begin to select the next vent. Holding the Shift key allows you to ADD to the selection.

Then press: CTRL+SHIFT+I to inverse the selection you have made.

Add some colour, using the Image>adjust>Variations.. method.. A bit of blue her is all that’s required. I then like to fine tune the colour using the image>adjust>hue/saturation feature.. Just have a play wound until the colour looks a perfect match

Complete.

Hit Ctrl+D to deselect your.. errr, selections.

The same technique can be adopted for the rear bumper.

Now time to fit some skirts..

Standard light on a Fiat Cinquecento - ready for some bad boy action ;)

First thing to do is to use the lasso tool and trace the layout of the desired bad boy. See the image to the left for reference as to what I mean here. Have opted for a simple straight eyebrow style.

Once you are happy, click on the lasso tool (if you aren’t on it already) and then drag the selection across to the paintwork as shown. (You drag by holding the left mouse button down in the middle of the selection and then dragging it across).

Ensuring that you are on the bodywork layer - hit Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V. This will copy and paste the selection you have made into another layer. Using the Move tool, click and drag the new layer over the top of the light.

Once you are happy with it’s position, it is now time to flatten the layers the usual way. Hit Ctrl+E to do this or Ctrl+Shit+E if you want to flatten all of your layers.

It is now starting to take shape. It would now benefit from a shadow below the badboy, don’t you think?

Ok then, time to grab the lasso tool and create a selection, just like the one on the image to the left. The selection created will be the shape and size of your shadow, so bear this in mind when making your selection.

After you have done that - image>adjust>brightness/contrast.

Using this dialogue box, lower the brightness.. this will mimic the shadow that we require.

Almost done now… hit Ctrl+D to deselect.

For increased realism, I then made a new layer, and with the line tool set at 1px and at around 25% opacity, drew a white line on the lower edge of the bonnet line. This acts as a highlight on the bonnet edge. A lowlight, if required, can be created with the use of a black line. Again, hit Ctrl+E or Ctrl+Shit+E to flatten the above layer you have created.

There we go, complete! I finished off the look by shaving off the Fiat badge.

Finally, don’t forget to repeat the above steps for the other side - otherwise it’d look a little strange!
