When applying gradient fills to objects in FreeHand, each object will have the full range of the gradient applied to it. However, this may not be the effect you want to create. Sometimes you may want the gradient fill to be shared across multiple objects. The way to do this is to apply the gradient to a composite path. The example in this tutorial uses FreeHand 9 on a text object that has been converted to paths. Read the rest of this entry »

Gradient fills are often used to shade objects for a realistic look. Using a gradient fill is limited because the gradient steps don’t always run in the same direction as the shape of the object. Many times you will encounter irregular shapes and you would like to give them a gradient fill only to achieve unsatisfactory results. This technique is useful in these situations. Although the latest version of Macromedia FreeHand has a built-in perspective drawing grid, this technique uses guide lines to rough out the object you are drawing. As shown below in the following steps, I was able to draw a DSL modem using this technique. Read the rest of this entry »

This technique is for drawing isometric or oblique rectangular shapes with Macromedia® FreeHand. It is similar to Drawing Technique Number 3, but instead of being a freeform technique, this one uses the Transform panel to control the angles. This tutorial was done with FreeHand 9. This very simple and basic technique is for drawing isometric or oblique rectangular shapes with Macromedia® FreeHand. This tutorial uses FreeHand 9, but the steps should be the same for most any version. This is just a loose drawing technique for making freeform isometric or oblique shapes “on the fly”. In other words, we’re not using any measurements. It is handy for making quick shapes where measurements are not critical. In the next tutorial I’ll show you how to use the Transform palette to control the angles. Read the rest of this entry »
